Toronto hosts North American Indigenous Games this month
The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) are coming to Toronto this July 16-23.
NAIG is an opportunity for Indigenous youth between the ages of 13 and 19 to compete in 14 different sports:
- 3-D Archery
- Athletics
- Badminton
- Baseball
- Basketball
- Canoe/Kayak
- Golf
- Lacrosse
- Rifle Shooting
- Soccer
- Softball
- Swimming
- Wrestling
- Volleyball
Athletes come from all Canadian provinces and territories, as well as 13 regions from the United States.
According to the events team, “the Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games will showcase and celebrate the distinct cultural heritage of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island and of the Province of Ontario – as the lands encompassing the City of Toronto and Region of Hamilton share deep, historical roots to Indigenous populations of the region.”
The event this year is expected to be the largest sporting and cultural gathering of Indigenous Peoples in North America, with more than 5,000 participants and 2,000 volunteers.
