Developing a ‘risk-list’ for your kids
There comes a day for every parent when we realize that our child is capable of more and is ready to accept additional freedom and responsibility. Seeing that day when it comes can be tricky, but for some, knowing how to let go and what specifically to change can be the bigger challenge.
Jennifer Breheny Wallace, a self-proclaimed helicopter mom, recognized the need to let her 7-year-old take on more risk, but she wasn’t sure where to start. So Jennifer consulted with the famously anti-helicopter mom, Lenore Skenazy, author of “Free-Range Kids: How to Raise Safe, Self-Reliant Children (Without Going Nuts with Worry)” and founder of the Free-Range Kids movement.
Here is the “risk-list” that Lenore came up with for Jennifer and her son William:
- Use a hammer
- Catch and keep bees
- Let the kids play in the front yard alone
- Let them cook their own breakfast
